Bird Haiku

BRIEF
Bird Haiku is a poetry collection by Spencer Thompson that captures quiet, meaningful moments from the author’s life, each connected to birds in some way. The book is structured as a journey familiar to birders and outdoor enthusiasts, moving from everyday residential encounters to moments on the road, in parks, along trails, in distant landscapes, and eventually back again. This intentional progression gives the collection a sense of movement, reflection, and return.

The design honors the subtle rhythm of haiku while creating a visual experience that feels observational, contemplative, and grounded in nature. The artwork plays a central role in shaping this experience. All of the art used in the book is sourced from the public domain, with many pieces originating as scientific illustrations once used as reference material. These works carry their own history, reflecting the care, precision, and curiosity of the artists and conservationists who contributed to the ornithological community.

Together, the poems and illustrations create a haiku journey that can also function as an amateur birder’s field guide.
